This cafe was designed for an old building with a heritage listed facade footprint that sits on a busy street amongst office buildings, residential apartments, a TAFE campus and a museum, leaving an interesting mixed demographic of office workers, residents, students and tourists.
Having worked as a barista in the past, the flow of traffic was extremely important to me in this project. I began the design process by mapping out the customer experience (see below).
I designed an organic bakery and cafe for this tenancy, providing a space for customers to get their caffeine fix, as well as providing a healthier option for quick breakfasts and lunches made up of organic whole foods.
Staying true to the theme of organics, I utilised a natural colour and material palette to create a grounded space amongst the busy cityscape. There is a designated area for takeaway customers to wait for their coffee, away from the more relaxed seating areas for those who wish to sit down and maybe get some work done on their laptops.
Acoustics were an important issue in this space, considering the high ceilings and hard materials throughout. To combat this, I created an acoustic concrete-look bulkhead above the serving counter, as well as acoustic pendants throughout the entire design.
